Distance creates desire
This series is inspired by the incredibly intriguing books and podcasts by Esther Perel, a Belgian psychotherapist of Polish-Jewish descent
who explores the tension between the need for security (love, belonging and closeness) and the need for freedom (erotic desire, adventure and distance) in human relationships.
“Love enjoys knowing everything about you; desire needs mystery.
Love likes to shrink the distance that exists between me and you, while desire is energized by it.
If intimacy grows through repetition and familiarity, eroticism is numbed by repetition.”
- Esther Perel -
In the Middle Ages, the technique of fresco involved applying pigments directly onto wet lime plaster, allowing the colors to become embedded in the drying plaster.
The use of casein paints on a dry fresco surface is a more modern variation, where the casein acts as a binder for the pigments and is applied after the plaster has dried, allowing for greater control over the color application.
Fresco is a very organic way of painting. I find it an appropriate material for this specific topic as you cannot influence the process of the lime drying, or what it will look like eventually. You have to go with the flow. Once the first layer has dried, you need to play with the cards you’ve been dealt with… and dance creatively around the boundaries the medium imposes.
There is value in the lines, the cracks, the imperfections, the bumps in the road, the experiences we have lived, it has shaped us to the human beings we are today. It’s simply beautiful 😍.

Relationships and romantic bonds can break you open so that you finally claim who you were meant to be.

This painting works in 4 directions, I’ve given each orientation a name, sth that it evokes when I see it . You may be seeing totally different things (and I sincerely hope so 🙈).
Can we see our ‘relations’ for what they really are?
It is our ability to reason, to communicate, that distinguishes us from animals, but it is also that same ability that often fucks it up... Talking too much, too little, staying in our heads versus really connecting.
“Seeing” from different angles | Talking less and feeling more | Being kind - always
might be some of the keys to ‘unlocking desire’…

Can we desire what we already have?
This painting explores the concept of separation, the potential for connection in a more & more disconnected society, the hunger in each of us to find and live something meaningful.

“She's the bass, she's the beat, she's the rhythm, she's the band
Just funk my life up
And that girl, so fine
Makes you wanna scream hallelujah”

Give me a good book

Give me deep conversation

This painting is a reflection on the balance between closeness and distance in relationships, the need for individual growth and the preservation of individuality. It is a visual reminder of the complexity in human connections.
This delicate balance allows relationships to evolve, deepen and flourish over time.

Colours, shapes, textures emerge to give us a ‘need to touch’ painting to remind us in a very tangible way what desire is.
Desire transcends and challenges conventional boundaries and preconceptions of beauty.
I invite you to touch this painting, the textures, the material, and allow yourself to feel.
These fresco’s need to be seen, touched, and desired.
One fresco. Different perspectives.
