In the Middle Ages, the technique of fresco involved applying pigments directly onto wet lime plaster, allowing the colors to become embedded in the drying plaster. The use of casein paints on a dry fresco surface is a more modern variation, where the casein acts as a binder for the pigments and is applied after the plaster has dried, allowing for greater control over the color application and potential for modifications.
